Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy originally designed to help people recover from trauma and PTSD.
A useful way to think about EMDR is that it targets experiences that feel “stuck” in the brain and body — not only catastrophic trauma. Sometimes the target is a major event; other times it’s repeated smaller experiences like criticism, rejection, humiliation, or chronic stress. If you have experienced repeated emotions, thought patterns, or behaviours that have created challenges in your life, EMDR may be an appropriate path forward to create lasting change.
Core beliefs like ‘I’m not good enough’ can often be traced back to our earliest attachment relationships and interactions. By following your brain through guided EMDR protocols, these negative beliefs, emotions, or body sensations can be re-processed adaptively, leading us to a place of wellness.
Other effective applications of EMDR include but are not limited to:
Anxiety disorders (social anxiety, panic, generalized anxiety)
Phobias
Performance anxiety (sports, public speaking, creative work)
Depression, especially when tied to painful life experiences
Grief and complicated bereavement
Chronic shame or low self-worth
Attachment wounds and childhood emotional neglect
Relationship patterns and emotional reactivity
Addictions and compulsive behaviors
Disturbing memories that don’t meet the definition of “trauma”
